What We Like

I really appreciate the look and feel of this scanner. I like the weight of the machine, as well as the extra grip that comes from the rubber overlay. The screen is more than sufficient for reading and identifying codes, and I like that you can connect it to your computer.

The functionality is what makes this scanner better than most. I appreciate that you can monitor so many different systems and reset each dashboard light individually. You can do a lot with this one device.

What We Don't Like

As with most OBD2 scanners, there are always going to be specific makes and models that don’t make the cut. However, it does include high-end brands like Porsche, Maserati, and Jaguar, which is better than other devices in its class.

When it comes to auto repair and maintenance, having a versatile and reliable OBD2 scanner can make a world of difference. However, not all scanners are built the same, which is why it’s imperative to compare models.

Thankfully, this unit from Autel is one of the most well-rounded we’ve seen in a while. Not only is it highly portable and easy to use, but it enables you to check many more systems than the competition. Let’s see how well you can monitor your car’s health with this device.

Look and Feel

When comparing different OBD2 scanners, the size and appearance of each model can vary wildly. Some versions will be quite bulky and hard to hold, while others are too small to read the screen effectively.

Fortunately, the MD805 is a perfect blend of form and function. The screen is wide enough to see codes clearly, as well as look at your car’s engine data. Since this model can live stream and display freeze frame information, having a sizeable backlit screen is highly beneficial.

One thing I like about this scanner is that it feels rugged in my hands. It comes with a rubber covering, which not only helps with your grip but protects the device if you ever drop it. The overall weight and design of this model are excellent.

Connectivity

As with all OBD2 scanners, you can plug this machine into your car’s OBD port. The cord that comes with it is sufficiently long, although I think it could be a little longer. As it is, you do have to stay pretty close to the driver’s seat to use the device.

Fortunately, you don’t have to do all of your data graphing on the scanner itself. It comes with a USB cord so that you can plug into the computer to download any data you need. I like to save graph results over time so that I can see how my car’s performance changes.

Functionality

The primary purpose of any OBD2 scanner is to help you identify a check engine light. Because the light can come on for a wide array of reasons, being able to see the code can help you figure out how to fix the problem and get your vehicle back to normal.

While the MD805 performs this task well, it comes with a slew of additional features that make it one of the most versatile options on the market. Here is a brief overview of what you can do with this machine.

Live Streaming - see how your car performs in real-time

Freeze Frame Data - get a comprehensive view of your engine and other internal systems

Oil Light Check

ABS System Check

Airbag Check

Electronic Parking Brake Check

Transmission Check

Overall, you can monitor more systems in your car with this scanner, making it a highly valuable tool for both casual users and car enthusiasts alike. Best of all, you can reset all of these lights in your dashboard, meaning that you won’t necessarily have to go to a mechanic.

Conclusion

When looking at different OBD2 scanners, you’ll be impressed by the versatility and performance of the MD805. While it’s not the most high-tech model I’ve seen, it’s more than sufficient for car enthusiasts who want more control over their vehicle’s performance.
