P1693 Code – What Does It Mean & How To Fix It

This is one of the most frequent OBD2 trouble codes. Read the full article below to know what it means, how to fix it, and what other codes may show related to it.

On-board-diagnostic codes (OBD) are broken down into four groups and may have different definitions between manufacturers. Make sure to have the vehicle's correct owners manual available for reference, and the right software, tools, scanner, and code readers ready in order to identify the issue.

Definition

Code P1693 has over 15 different definitions. Each manufacturer can, and oftentime does,  assign a unique description to a given code, based on the control modules contained within the vehicle. P1693, as defined by the manufacturer Dodge, to be a turbo charge control circuit malfunction. This code presents itself when extra, or unknown codes have been identified within one or multiple control modules within the vehicle.

Causes

There are specific computers and operating systems that are responsible for specific controls within a vehicles framework. When a P1693 code is present, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and/or the Power Control Unit (PCU) has detected additional codes that either weren’t there before, or are not longer recognized.

Symptoms

Symptoms may vary, but some of the most common issues are rough idling or a clunky engine sound while running, especially at certain engine speeds. The cause could be the injector issues.

If the vehicle has trouble starting, it could be an issue with the fuel pump. If the vehicle loses power while towing or hauling a load, there could be a problem with the fuel system. These are some of the most common, and obvious, issues experienced but doesn’t necessarily indicate or confirm a direct relationship between the two.

Diagnosis

When trying to isolate the problem, especially if you’re a first timer, getting the help of a professional mechanic is recommended. In order to achieve a proper diagnosis, the associated software, scanners, and code readers will be necessary.

Since code P1693 indicates additional, or unknown codes within one or more of the control modules, it’s important to know the exact year, make, and model as well as have the correct OBD2 tools and resources. If you’re a DIY type, one of the most simple ways to isolate the issue is scan the codes and documents in the freeze frame data.

Clear the codes, and test the vehicle again to see if any indicators pop back up. Make sure to look under the hood. Do all the hoses appear to be connected? Does the wiring look intact? Check for any debris or build-up that could cause problems.

Common mistakes

There are many mistakes that can be made when trying to isolate issues, especially when it comes to vehicle codes. Trained professionals with experience and knowledge are most equipped to handle and manage through the process of identification, isolation, and resolution of the issue(s).

By putting their knowledge to work, this helps minimize the likelihood of misdiagnosis which only costs more time and money in the end. Another mistake is when people make assumptions about their knowledge or their understanding of how to fix the problem. Not only can this cause a much bigger problem, but it can cause the problem to grow and expand beyond the initial issue.

Related codes

Because there are hundreds of codes out there, each with the likelihood of being manufacturer specific, it would be incredibly hard to give a one size solution to any given problem or code.

After a scan is completed and a code is provided, there could be hundreds of underlying codes causing the root of the problem. That doesn’t necessarily mean there is something drastically wrong, but it does indicate that something isn’t as it was originally, causing the need to inspect the issue, make sure there isn’t any disconnections or duplications, and resolve. If there are multiple codes in question, start with one and use the process of elimination to further resolve.

Conclusion

It is important to respect that trained professionals and those with the experience in the field are typically the subject matter experts. These are the people and professionals that have done the work. Have handled these situations before and who have the resources.

Things can change quickly and unless you’re directly involved in that industry on a daily basis, it is important to seek professional support, or if you enjoy doing it yourself, make sure that your sources are reliable and you’ve done your research to make sure the information you have is accurate.
